Review - Angry Birds HD for iPad

Angry Birds on the iPhone was a splendid game that had us cracking up when we first played it,  So you can well imagine we were thrilled when Chillingo gave us Angry Birds HD for the iPad. They have seamlessly updated the game with smoother visuals and obviously a larger canvas for game-play owing to the huge iPad screen.

If you have never played Angry Birds on the iPhone,  Where the hell have you been!  In short its a fantastically moreish game, Evil piggies have stolen the birds’ eggs,  and the birds aren’t very pleased. Its your job to catapult the various birds at the pigs and their forts to knock them down and destroy them.

To help you achieve this pig attacking egg saving duty you have a huge slingshot and several types of birds,  ranging from small trios of bluebirds,  wood destroying pointy birds(no that’s not their real title) right up to egg-bomb dropping Goliaths.   To save your eggs you must slingshot the above mentioned tweeters into various piggies and structures  to destroy them,  a task which on some levels is delightfully challenging.

Gameplay on the iPad is practically identical to the iPhone version but the larger screen and glorious graphics are  hugely beneficial. The cute characters, smooth animations and expertly designed levels fly out of the screen at you. Aiming the birds is now easier and the gaming area although spanning several screens is much better due to the zoom out field of view being much larger for lining up a shot, something that on the iPhone version was a bit eye-straining.

If you already have the iPhone version of Angry Birds then you may not want to shell out on the iPad version as it doesnt offer anything more  levelwise, what it does offer is better gameplay and much improved graphics, Although new levels are due to be added. It is definately worth the money for new players though.

Review - Worldcard Contacts for iPhone

These days no business person wants a pocket full of contacts cards or a wallet so thick with cards that they can no longer wrestle it into their pocket. Have you ever gone to a Conference or meeting and been handed bundles of cards for prospective clients or customers. Would you like a way to get all those bits of paper and cards into one place, easily managed and updated……Fear not, Worldcard Contacts is here.

Worldcard Contacts is a contact management app that lets you have all the details as well as an actual image of the card in one place right there on your iPhone. Upon opening the app for the first time it will import all your contacts directly from the iphone contacts,   You Will notice how similar it looks to the iphones native application although the darker graphics of the Worldcard app are much nicer.

WorldCard has all the features you’d expect from a contacts app you can easily add,  delete,  edit contacts as well as share via email,  sms and call a contact.  Adding works in much the same way as the standard app,  Where this app shines though is the ability to have groups.
Groups is an excellent addition to your contact arsenal,  Apple missed a trick by not having this built in and WorldCard Contacts makes this easy to use. As a default you will find 2 groups ready in the app - iPhone and WorldCard. You can edit and chop n change these to your own preference which makes it easier to manage lots of contacts into easy to find places.

What really sets this app far and away above standard is the ability to take a picture right in phone of the business card  and store it there for easy reference, From the cards tab in the app you can organise all your cards,  like a digital Rolodex. This is accessed using the camera icon,  Pressing this will present you with the camera and you can image the business card right there and then,  Once you have the image you can crop and add the details right into the app and that’s it  contact saved. The contact will now display in the Worldcard app and is easily imported to you iPhone contacts as well.

WorldCard Contacts is a fantastically designed app with a few standout features over and above the Apple contacts app. Having groups and card images is beyond helpful. The only thing we would like to see is perhaps  an area  for notes  about the person such as Birthday or other important dates,  maybe meal preference for important clients would also be a consideration as would other preferences. Integration with the calender app may be a future possibility the developers could consider.

Over all our time with the Worldcard app was well spent  and it is something which we have already adopted for contact use rather than standard. The features and graphics of this app are just  nicer  and smoother and so well presented we dont think the native contacts app is of any more use.

Worldcard Contacts is on the App Store HERE  for just £2.39

Fring for iPhone 4 Videocalling just got easier

As we all know, FaceTime (two-way video calling) on the iPhone only works when connected to a Wi-Fi network. Fring aims to change that and allow you to do two-way video calling with 3G in the Fring app.

With the new fring for iPhone you get lots of fring goodies including 2 way video-calling where you want and with whom you want!

Face-to-face video calls with friends on their Droids, Nokia (Symbian S60) and other iPhones

Video calls over 3G or Wi-Fi (Performance over 3G is subject to mobile operators’ 3G coverage & quality)

Download and Install

I did have a chance to download and install Fring on my iPhone 4 to test this feature out. Fring is a little cumbersome in that you actually have to register for a Fring id in order for the two-way video calling to work. I kind of wish I’d be able to simply select an individual from my contact list and begin the video call, minus having to register with Fring.

Getting The Fring App To Load

I was able to get the two-way video calling over Fring to work after a little fiddling around. The Fring app on the iPhone took forever to load (the spinning ball at the top of the screen seemed to spin forever). I finally gave up waiting and restarted the iPhone. I then relaunched the app and after a few minutes the spinner stopped spinning and Fring had finally loaded completely. I could finally attempt my first two-way video call over 3G using Fringe.

Testing Fring It Out

So I got my Fring app to load but the person with whom I was going to make a test call with had the same continuous spinning ball issue that I experienced earlier. I told him to restart the iPhone 4 and he did and then his Fring app worked.

You need to add buddies as contacts for Fring to work. You can do this either by sending them an invite within the profile page of the buddy list menu. Or, you can go to the More menu and select Add New Buddy and from their you can input their specific Fring ID.

Once they accept your invite, you will now see a video option in their buddy list profile page. As long as you both are online (have Fring launched on your phone), the two-way video calling should work.

When we were both online (had Fring launched on the iPhone) and did not have the continuous spinning ball issue, Fring worked. I was able to make video calls over 3G using my iPhone 4. However, it seemed the every time we exited the app and then relaunched the app, Fring would freeze up and have the continuous spinning ball issue. The issue would clear with a iPhone reboot (sometimes we didn’t need to reboot, we instead just waited it out), but you can imagine how annoying that can become.

Final Thoughts

Fring works as advertised and I was able to make two-way video calls over 3G. However, the continuous spinning ball issue dampens the experience. I also wish that you did not need a Fring ID for this to work. In any case, you can finally make two-way video calls over 3G - just make sure your friends have Fring installed as well.

According to an un-named source Apple will be releasing the Next Generation of iPod’s in September this year and they will feature a host of new functions.
Claiming the info comes from a John Lewis Product meeting it has been suggested that the new iPod Touch May well include a 5-megapixel camera, a front facing webcam for FaceTime video calls over Wi-Fi along with gyroscope and accelerometer for improved gaming.
The new iPods  should also include HD Video capability and instant uploading to Youtube  and social network sites.
We can certainly see this being the case going on the specs of the iPhone 4 its the next logical step for the portable media system.
